Superman's Director's Commentary is full of interesting reveals and exciting teases for the future courtesy of filmmaker James Gunn. Among them are a few that tee up his sequel-that's-not-a-sequel, Man of Tomorrow

In Superman, the hero successfully overcomes an attack from Ultraman and The Engineer by sending them crashing into the grounds of the Metropolis Meteors' baseball stadium. We don't see María Gabriela de Faría's Angela Spica after that, but she's alive and now confirmed to return in the not-too-distant future.

"[Superman knocked] The Engineer unconscious," Gunn confirmed. "She's out of the movie. Where does she go? Well, you're going to find that out in the next movie."

The DC Studios co-CEO addressed Ultraman's status, as well. "We discover that Ultraman is a clone of Superman. [In the comics], Ultraman is from Earth-3, where he's a part of The Crime Syndicate and an evil version of Superman. There are some similarities here. Also, you might ask yourself, 'Where does Ultraman go at the end of the movie?'"

Gunn added, "He sends him up into the black hole. Is this the end of Ultraman? I don't know." Whether he's hinting at the villain perhaps winding up on Earth-3 or fans are right about the clone becoming Bizarro remains to be seen.

Rumour has it that John Cena will return as Peacemaker in Man of Tomorrow, and Gunn seemed to hint at that when he weighed in on Chris Smith's surprise cameo in Superman

"Peacemaker is not a fan of Superman, obviously. That's going to be important in the future, actually," he teased, adding that the meeting room from Superman, where Lex Luthor, Rick Flag Sr., and more discussed world events, will be featured in the Peacemaker season 2 finale. The question is, will Lex be among them?

Superman, DC Studios' first feature film to hit the big screen, is set to soar into theaters worldwide this summer from Warner Bros. Pictures.

In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.

The movie stars David Corenswet in the dual role of Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

Also appearing are Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, María Gabriela de Faría, Wendell Pierce, Alan Tudyk, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Neva Howell, and Milly Alcock.

"Superman is an indescribable joy," we said in our review"A beautiful, moving thrill, David Corenswet is the perfect Man of Steel in a movie packed full of ideas. Fortunately, under James Gunn’s expert direction, all of those work, creating a rousing experience that flies higher than DC has in a very long time."

Superman is now available on HBO Max, Digital, and 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD.

Yes, very eager to see what James Gunn has in store for us. I've been a fan since 'TROMEO & JULIET' and I've never been let down by one of his films or shows. In fact, I'm gonna take it a step further and really upset the 'associate producers' by saying, I think he should hire Joss Whedon to write 'THE TERRIFICS' series or film (doesn't matter) because there hasn't been a better voice in ensemble writing since the cult canceled him.

@JackDeth - I have been a fan of Whedon’s work but given the allegations against him , I don’t think he’ll be working in Hollywood again any time soon or at all (and deservedly so if true).
JackDeth
JackDeth - 9/24/2025, 9:04 AM
@TheVisionary25 - The allegations against him are that he was not nice on the set. It was especially bad in his early career, but a lot of people worked with him multiple times and had no problems with him. Directors being tyrants on set is nothing new and the people on the set of his later projects (Avengers, AOS, The Nevers) never had a bad thing to say about him. It wasn't until he took over JUSTICE LEAGUE and had to work with Snyder's crew of non-actors that he was not as kind with them. All the extra shit Fisher said was de-bunked and Gadot didn't like him because she's just awful. He never had any sexual allegations against him, all of that was rumor. He just wasn't nice enough. He deserved better.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 9/24/2025, 9:11 AM
@JackDeth - I don’t remember those sexual allegations being a rumor but could be wrong…

However other people like Charisma Carpenter & such (women specifically) had unpleasant or uncomfortable interactions with him as they have stated.

@JackDeth - perfectly said on Whedon
whynot
whynot - 9/24/2025, 9:53 AM
@TheVisionary25 - Charisma Carpenter was an employee that broke her contract by making body alterations like tattoos and cutting her hair without disclosing it with the show she was working on. This is a big NO NO when you are under contract. As for Whedon asking her if she’s planning on keeping her baby? I don’t know why that is such a bad thing maybe he had a legit reason for asking it. Maybe he was upset bc she didn’t disclose the news til the middle of filming and he had many people working for him and it was a very last minute rewrite because of this season 4 of Angel definitely suffered. I always found it interesting that he was such a bad boss yet she had no issue returning in season 5 of Angel
JackDeth
JackDeth - 9/24/2025, 9:53 AM
@TheVisionary25 - Nope. He cheated on his wife and she went scorched Earth on him, calling him a 'fake feminist' and stuff. No sexual allegations were proven. Michelle Trachtenberg said she wasn't allowed to be alone in a room with him and people took that to mean it was because he was a pervert. The truth is (since she was a minor), she wasn't allowed to be spoken to without her mother around. Common practice.

Also, the Charisma Carpenter shit was re-litigated in the court of public opinion AFTER the Snyder stuff. When it first came out (when it happened), the people on set were mad at her for hiding her pregnancy and they tried to work it into the show. Whedon was upset and asked if she was going to keep it (an admittedly-thoughtless comment) and she took it as the worst thing that's ever been said to her. She's notoriously difficult to work with.
JackDeth
JackDeth - 9/24/2025, 9:56 AM
@whynot - Exactly. I've spoken to people who worked on the sets of both Buffy and Angel and they've even said Carpenter was not easy to get along with.

Interesting , I did not know all that if that’s the case then perhaps he deserves another chance

This was just brought to my attention. WB puts their director commentaries exclusively on AppleTV+. I found out the hard way after receiving this fantastic GID steelbook. Most people don't care for that thing. It bugs me it isn't on the physical release but there's two ac3 stereo tracks, something tells me they pulled it. Oh well, the movie is still better than the Snyderverse and I can't wait for more!

Patient2670 - 9/24/2025, 10:56 AM
@JackDeth - Along with Gal Gadot, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Charisma Carpenter, his ex-wife, and many others have made these accusations. I don't believe any of them filed legal charges against him, but you can't discount it as rumor just because you think Gal Gadot is "just awful". Whedon is a talented writer and a capable, yet unremarkable director who was in demand because he made money for the studios. These were all young (careerwise, at least) actors who were afraid to jeopardize their own careers by taking shots at the golden goose. And yes, Directors being tyrants has been a long prevailant problem. Doesn't make it right. For a myriad of reasons, people have simply let them get away with it. Once one person stood up and said it out loud, the others felt safe enough to coroborate and share their own experiences. And you can't claim that people on his later projects didn't complain, when Justice League (which is the project that actually shone a light on all this) was the last thing he did.
JackDeth
JackDeth - 9/24/2025, 11:05 AM
@Patient2670 - I already explained why the cast of JUSTICE LEAGUE didn't like him. Gal Gadot is a terrible Human being and not one of them (maybe Ben Affleck) can actually act. He tried his best to fill in for Snyder, but Snyder's directing style was way different since he was only interested in what looked cool and not if the story made sense. Being an ass on set for his earlier projects isn't right, but he shouldn't have been canceled for it. The ONLY reason he got canceled was because the Snyder cult wanted it. He apologized in an article after that and that was that. He deserves another chance, is all I'm saying.

ObserverIO - 9/24/2025, 11:12 AM
@Patient2670 - Whedon said that the cast of Justice League was the most difficult cast he ever worked with. They all refused to work or take his direction and read new scenes out of a misguided and unprofessional loyalty to the previous director.

He basically called them all assholes in so many words. Should we cancel them too?
Highflyer
Highflyer - 9/24/2025, 2:08 PM
@JackDeth - Joss, is that you?
Highflyer
Highflyer - 9/24/2025, 2:12 PM
@JackDeth - Did you actually watch both versions? You said Snyder didn't care if the story made sense, but Joss's version made less sense compared to Snyder's film. Snyder and terrio literally worked with Ray in order to be informed about representation, but you're saying he only cared about things looking cool? Also you may not like them as people, but Ray and Ezra can act.
JackDeth
JackDeth - 9/24/2025, 2:49 PM
@Highflyer - Ray Fisher can act? That's news to me. He should be getting all the leading man roles now then. Wonder why he isn't. Oh wait, he was in 'REBEL MOON' right? Anything else recently?
JackDeth
JackDeth - 9/24/2025, 2:52 PM
@ObserverIO - Most of them have canceled themselves.
POWERDUDE

@bobevanz - Bob, I’m pretty sure you can update your disc. Just ask WB to replace it. There’s a link online. I have the Apple I tuned digital version.
Highflyer
Highflyer - 9/24/2025, 6:02 PM
@JackDeth - You think talent is the be all end of all of who gets leading role films? Ray is a theatre trained actor and there's also a reason he was considered such a highlight in ZSJL. He also has two films coming up.
Patient2670
Patient2670 - 9/24/2025, 6:11 PM
@JackDeth - Bryan Singer got cancelled for being an ass on set. Nobody seemed to have a problem with that one. This has nothing to do with the "Snyder Cult". If anything, the crew (and this is true of any production crew- I can say this with confidence since I've been doing it for decades), would have been psyched to get the paycheck and extra work, since Whedon reshot more than 80% of the footage he used for his cut. Probably several months of work for hundreds of freelance crew.
And by the way, How exactly did Whedon's Justice league story make any more sense than Snyder's version?
I think an apology is a great start, but at the same time, a studio still won't hire him if it would be detrimental to the profit of a project. People simply won't pay to see something by someone with a reputation like his. And his statement wasn't really an apology or taking any kind of accountability for the reported events. It was more of a rebuttal.
Should he get an opportunity to make right, or rehab his reputation? Sure, but that would be him asking people to be more compassionate to him, than he was to them. It also doesn't mean audiences or employers are required to pay into that rehab. If someone changes lanes on the freeway without a signal, it may not be a big deal, but they're still accountable if they get killed in an accident resulting from their indescretion. It sucks when that happens, but it does, just the same. And that's why we all ought always be mindful of our actions and possible consequences.
Patient2670
Patient2670 - 9/24/2025, 6:21 PM
@ObserverIO - If his claims were able to be, in any way substantiated, yeah. But there was only the one guy saying it. I would bet the mortgage that the reluctance (You can't say refusal, because they all ended up doing it) had more to do with the quality of the scenes involving chatacters they had embodied foor years by that point, than it was "misguided and unprofessional loyalty". Why would I say that? Well, we've seen both versions of the movie. Other than Affleck and maybe Momoa, these were the roles that were going to define or catipult their carreers. I'd be protective of that as well. Mark Hamill did much the same thing with Rian Johnson.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 9/24/2025, 6:56 PM
@Patient2670 - I've seen both versions too. Apart from the Cyborg sequence and some improved CG, Whedon's is way better. Both versions are bad, but ZSJL is unreleasable.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 9/24/2025, 7:04 PM
Even the Cyborg sequence is overated. Little rich kid crying in his limo to his mommy because his Daddy wouldn't see his game. stalking women and committing cybercrime for them. I did enjoy the scene where he's learning to fly though. That was a good moment, with the music kicking at just the right second.
Patient2670
Patient2670 - 9/24/2025, 7:50 PM
@ObserverIO - And you're totally entitled to that opinion.
JackDeth
JackDeth - 9/24/2025, 7:50 PM
@Highflyer - I had to look them up to see he's got a bit part in two films, one of which is starring and directed by Ben Affleck. Yeah, he's got such a great future. Also, no he wasn't a 'highlight' he was completely wrong for the role. Everyone knows Cyborg is the young optimistic fun-loving football player who's more likely to do a touchdown dance when he kicks the bad guy's ass. Instead he was all '[frick] the world' like he was pretending he was Raven. Terrible portrayal.
Highflyer
Highflyer - 9/24/2025, 7:59 PM
@JackDeth - "bit part". What are you basing it on? Again, do you think talent equals leading roles?

The creator of Cyborg himself was happy and felt like the character was done justice. When I say highlight, I'm referring to the critical response to the film. Also, have you read Cyborg's origin? He doesn't become a happy fun loving character the moment he's transformed. It's filled with a lot of pain and hatred.
JackDeth
JackDeth - 9/24/2025, 8:02 PM
@Patient2670 - No not the same thing. Bryan was more than just an ass on set. Alex Burton knows why Bryan Singer was canceled... and the reason he refused to come back.

@Highflyer - Yeah, bit parts. Like sixth or seventh lead in a film that's not an ensemble. I'm sorry, you're gonna have to point me to a performance of his that's any good. I haven't seen one yet.
Highflyer
Highflyer - 9/24/2025, 8:07 PM
@ObserverIO - Yet the "unreleasable" faired better with audiences and critics. There is irony to be found by that. How was Whedon's way better anyway?
Highflyer
Highflyer - 9/24/2025, 8:09 PM
@ObserverIO - You sound like J Jonah Jameso framing things in the worst way to make a character sound bad.
Highflyer
Highflyer - 9/24/2025, 8:12 PM
@JackDeth - Whether you think his acting is bad is up to you. More power to you, but to say his cyborg is a terrible portrayal is off the mark. Especially when you read stories like Tales of the new teen titans.
JackDeth
JackDeth - 9/24/2025, 8:16 PM
@Highflyer - All just my opinion, but the guy who played him in 'DOOM PATROL' was WAYY better.
Patient2670
Patient2670 - 9/24/2025, 8:22 PM
@JackDeth - Trust me, I've had plenty of experience with the Bryan singer situation. Oddly enough, Alex Burton's lawsuit wasn't actually against Singer, himself, but his friend, Marc Collins-Rector who was the one hosting the parties. That said, and good for Burton- though it caused him to leave acting altogether, Bryan Singer managed to keep working on several high profile movies for nearly another 20 years after that. It was finally his behavior on Bohemian Rhapsody that got him cancelled.
JackDeth
JackDeth - 9/24/2025, 8:25 PM
@Patient2670 - My point was that putting Whedon (a man who yelled at some people on set) in the same category as Singer (who did a LOT worse) isn't a fair comparison.
Patient2670
Patient2670 - 9/24/2025, 8:30 PM
@JackDeth - Actually, There were accusations of sexual misconduct or innapropriate behavior against Whedon as well. I believe including by Michelle Trachtenberg, who was under age at the time. I believe, on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, he was forbidden from being alone in a room with her.
JackDeth
JackDeth - 9/24/2025, 8:37 PM
@Patient2670 - Everyone always goes right to that one. She said that and people took it to mean it was because he was a pervert, but no. This is a common practice when actors are minors. Her mom saw him yell at people and made the decree that he was never to be left alone with her daughter. The fact that people took it to a dark place is gross.
Highflyer
Highflyer - 9/24/2025, 8:48 PM
@JackDeth - That's fine. But DP was mainly tackling a different stage in Victor's life. There's no version of Cyborg where he comes out of his transformation loving life. He's a very bitter person intially.
Patient2670
Patient2670 - 9/24/2025, 9:27 PM
@JackDeth - I'm not sure why you're so intent on defending him. The bottom line remains that they guy is pretty much universally considered an unrepentant asshole and nobody wants to work with him or hire him.
JackDeth
JackDeth - 9/24/2025, 9:31 PM
@Patient2670 - So I debunked the worst of what he supposedly did and your response is, 'Well everyone hates him.' This is the issue. He wasn't 'reviled' until the 'associate producers' canceled him for 'ruining' Snyder's vision.
whynot
whynot - 9/24/2025, 9:41 PM
